Yeah...sending this one out...to a friend of mine, who has been going through a few things for a minute. This one is dediciated to you - stay up homie!
There were tons of official and unofficIal remixes of Mobb tracks during the 90's, without even counting all the pre-mixes and original versions. One particularly nice version, was the official remix of "Survival of the Fittest", with the haunting, echoey sounds and the added touch of Crystal Johnson's smooth singing which mixed in perfectly with the music. This, along with the dope picture cover, was a great 12" to own and a must-have for any fan.
However "as long as fiends smoke crack", once the accapella hit, there were bound to be other remixes. Unfortunately a few of these remixes never came out commercially, and in the case of some of them, people didnt even know they existed - let alone imagine how they might sound. And as with the much sought after (but not to my taste) Beatnuts remix of Shook Ones, there also existed other buried remix treasures, including one by another 'Nuts affiliate - the Mighty V.I.C. - who took it upon himself to remix "Survival of the Fittest"...
I think its a pity that a lot more of these remixes never got heard. So, ignore the fact that the cassette isnt anything special to look at and take a listen to this one...

These original versions were due to appear on Trag's unreleased/controversial 2nd album "Black Rage" (1992), but A&M Records got cold balls and decided to change the title to "Saga Of A Hoodlum"(1993) change the tracklist and remix some of the tracks (we have put the 3 previously available album 'remixes' on the flip). The "Black Rage Demos" are sought after (previously only available as crusty dubs from Westwood's Capital Rap Show) and production wise are closer to Trag's earlier work, the depressing original mix of "Death Row" is genius and the venomous production of the original "At Large" is nothing short of amazing - Trag holds no bars. The original "Pump The Funk" (this was originally named "Shit For Your System") is totally different to the final version with a stripped back beat for the jeeps.Special thanks to Iller Regime Recordings for hooking up the audio (infamous QBC aficionado) and Robbie at <a href="http://www.unkut.com/" target="_blank">http://www.unkut.com/</a> for putting us in contact with Trag.... hopefully one day the remaining lost album tracks will see the light of day, tracks like "Adolesents At War", "Black Rage" and the anti-cop "Bullet" are just too good to be lost in the A&M vaults!<br /><br />.... hopefully one day the remaining lost album tracks will see the light of day, tracks like "Adolesents At War", "Black Rage" and the anti-cop "Bullet" are just too good to be lost in the A&M vaults!<br /><br />DWG009 - INTELLIGENT HOODLUM / TRAGEDY - 'BLACK RAGE DEMOS' (sticker sleeve / limited to 250 hand numbered copies)</p><p>Containing 3 previously unreleased Intelligent Hoodlum / Tragedy tracks (together with the 3 final album versions on the flipside) re-mastered for optimum audio quality. Nas was liking it, and he was trying different rhymes to it. We would sit there, and he'd say some of his shit. But he didn't really know which rhyme he wanted to say. and I was there, being like his little coach. And I was like, "That it son", he was like "that's it?", I was like "~~~~~, that's it!" But he had already went through 3 or 4 rhymes, and he couldn't really see which one he wanted it to be. But I heard it. Once it came out his mouth, I was like, That's it. Our main focus was just to make sure that he get his nut off and do what he gotta do. When he did his thing, I wrote something real quick, just to get this shit really looking like something. Ghost just put the cherry on the top. No hook, cause we didn't care about hooks like that. All we had was the "RZA, Chef, Ghost and Nas" which is more or less an introductory hook. Not really a hook.<br /><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;">NAS:</span> Rae would come out to Queensbridge, I would go to Staten Island. We'd just ride and hang out all night. We didn't call each other to work. We called each other to hang out. Somehow we wound up in the studio. RZA had a couple of beats ready. He played them for me. I got on both of them. The other one never came out. I was honored to be asked to be on the album. Raekwon was ahead of his time. I knew Rae was a classic artist and the album was going to be a music classic.<br /><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;">GHOSTFACE KILLAH:</span> Nas banged it out in one night. He went first with his shit. We all came after. Son was fast. Nas had a couple verses. He spit one verse to us and then another, not on the mic. He just asked "How this sound?" and then we picked the one he spit. He still had the pen in his hand and all the other shit, but son got in there and just threw an ill crack verse. He was on fire.Cannshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03987075893744884371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6760134398664776945.post-27822870877002871232009-09-17T19:27:00.021+01:002009-09-17T20:42:18.843+01:00Through the Lights, Camera and Action...<em><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong></strong></span></em><span style="color:#ff0000;"></span><br /><em><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Nas</span> - '<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Deja</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Vu</span>'</strong></span></em><br /><br />'<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Deja</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Vu</span>'. Arguably <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Nas</span>' best ever unreleased track and without doubt one of my favourites. Not only does it represent <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Nas</span> as it his finest lyrically, but maybe more importantly in the context of post '<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">Illmatic</span>' <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">Nas</span>, it provides him with the perfect musical composition on which to shine.<br />However, as is often the case with <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">pre</span>-<span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">Internet</span> unreleased music, a lot of mystery and rumour surrounds this amazing cut. For years now, people have speculated on whether this was recorded before or after <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">Raekwon's</span> 'Verbal Intercourse' (where <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">Nas</span> spits pretty much an identical first verse).<br />Many have also questioned whether it was <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">actually</span> an out-take from an '<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">Illmatic</span>' session. But perhaps most interestingly, everybody seems to have an idea or thought on who produced this musical masterpiece - with names such as Pete Rock being credited - but yet nobody ever seemed to know for sure.<br /><br />Until now.<br /><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;"><em><strong>"Getting Props is a True Thugs Wife"</strong></em><br /></span><br />Despite the bullshit he went through with Columbia, and with the gift/ curse of producing one of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15">Nas</span>' best ever records - yet without the masses knowing it was made by him, I was lucky enough to get to speak with the actual producer of this record, <strong>Chris Winston</strong>, in order to finally set the record straight.<br /><br />So, over 14 years after he made the track, Chris was humble enough to give me the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_16">downlow</span> on how he came to work with <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_17">Nas</span>, when the cut was recorded, and why it was never released...<br /><br /><br /><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyurAbGPynx9bTGnsSmVlrUNVeks9ipeFNqwROv1NLY04cqZuvZQ6lOXJR1H809vWRYd4LHBjw0dd-8mrwzpNOuWMQypeB-or_jVoyoLOirRyDX3WpJwnwqycqivVkjFIiDH4JsBrDmG79/s1600-h/IMG_8555_CW_PS.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382506564773077506" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 214px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyurAbGPynx9bTGnsSmVlrUNVeks9ipeFNqwROv1NLY04cqZuvZQ6lOXJR1H809vWRYd4LHBjw0dd-8mrwzpNOuWMQypeB-or_jVoyoLOirRyDX3WpJwnwqycqivVkjFIiDH4JsBrDmG79/s320/IMG_8555_CW_PS.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="color:#999999;"><span style="color:#999999;"><em><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_18">Canns</span> </em>- So firstly, can you confirm to everyone when you actually produced the track '<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_19">Deja</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_20">Vu</span>'? This stayed locked in the vaults, he laid down a verse then wanted it erased the next day... I kept a DAT for myself and never leaked it because I respected him and I don't do people like that. Also let me say that speaking of masters, I have the only version of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_50">Deja</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_51">Vu</span> on DAT (digital tape to you youngsters) in existence. Everything I've heard on YouTube and mp3's leaked are from a cassette tape <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_52">Nas</span> took after the sessions. So when people talk about "quality of production" they are critiquing a CASSETTE tape. If they heard my DAT they would know that it was post <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_53">Illmatic</span>....<br /></span><br /><span style="color:#999999;"><em><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_54">Canns</span> </em>- And you mention that this never made the cut due to Politics and Bullshit with Columbia? Are you still cool with <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_55">Nas</span> after this?<br /></span><br /><span style="color:#9999ff;"><em>CW</em> - I ran into <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_56">Nas</span> in front of the Columbia Records building a few weeks after the session and he told me it was politics. I think they were pushing him to make more radio friendly shit and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_57">Deja</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_58">Vu</span> was just too raw of a joint for the album.<br /></span><br /><span style="color:#999999;"><em><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_59">Canns</span> </em>...and I guess they <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_60">didn't</span> try and reach out to you later when 'The Lost Tapes' dropped either?</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#9999ff;"><em>CW</em> - They didn't reach out to me probably because they didn't know who I was or how to get at me. I never waived a flag and said "I produced this" until I saw people getting it twisted.<br /><br /></span><span style="color:#999999;"><em><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_61">Canns</span> </em>- So i presume you weren't exactly feeling 'It Was Written' when it dropped?!! I gotta say that over the years i have grown to really like the LP, after <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_62">initially</span> being so disappointed, but had '<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_63">Deja</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_64">Vu</span>' and 'Silent Murder' been on it this LP would have been even better. ('Silent Murder' was on the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_65">Jap</span>/ Euro <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_66">CD's</span> and US tape versions only originally)</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#9999ff;"><em>CW</em> - I wasn't feeling the whole record, maybe because I was a little bitter than <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_67">Deja</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_68">Vu</span> didn't make it. Even today though I think it could have been a better follow up to <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_69">Illmatic</span> if some of the "fluff" wasn't there. ("If I Ruled The World")<br />I still think <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_70">Deja</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_71">Vu</span> would have made that record better, but of course I do, I produced it!<br /><br /><span style="color:#999999;"><span style="color:#999999;"><em><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_72">Canns</span> </em>- Have you produced tracks for any different <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_73">artists</span> which never saw the light of day?</span><br /></span><br /><em>CW</em> - I've produced a lot of shit that hasn't seen the light of day over the years, I am really weary of bad deals and bad politics... The music industry is a dark world.<br /><br /></span><span style="color:#999999;"><span style="color:#999999;"><em><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_74">Canns</span> </em>- What about Chris Winston in the future? Can we expect to see you stepping back behind the boards again, or has this whole experience put you off producing records for good?</span><br /></span><br /><span style="color:#9999ff;"><em>CW</em> - I write a lot of shit every day and If the situation is right you will see me producing records, but I will def need to be paid FIRST.<br /></span></p><p><br /><br />So, after all these years of speculation, there you have it. Once again, I want to give a huge thanks to Chris Winston for reaching out and for breaking down the truth behind this <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_75">masterpiece</span>.<br /><br />If you want to find out more about Chris, you can find him at www.chriswinston.com.<br />And remember, next time you're telling your people about how ill '<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_76">Deja</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_77">Vu</span>' is, make sure you tell them that Chris produced it.<br /><br /><br /><object id="divplaylist" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=" height="28" width="335" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000"><param name="_cx" value="8864"><param name="_cy" value="741"><param name="FlashVars" value=""><param name="Movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=8545314-3a1"><param name="Src" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=8545314-3a1"><param name="WMode" value="Window"><param name="Play" value="-1"><param name="Loop" value="-1"><param name="Quality" value="High"><param name="SAlign" value=""><param name="Menu" value="-1"><param name="Base" value=""><param name="AllowScriptAccess" value=""><param name="Scale" value="ShowAll"><param name="DeviceFont" value="0"><param name="EmbedMovie" value="0"><param name="BGColor" value=""><param name="SWRemote" value=""><param name="MovieData" value=""><param name="SeamlessTabbing" value="1"><param name="Profile" value="0"><param name="ProfileAddress" value=""><param name="ProfilePort" value="0"><param name="AllowNetworking" value="all"><param name="AllowFullScreen" value="false"><embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=8545314-3a1" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></object></p>Cannshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03987075893744884371noreply@blogger.com4
